How to use Custom Fields or Tags to Unsubscribe Contacts
Tags and custom fields are powerful tools within an email service provider that allow you to segment and manage your email list more effectively. One common use of these features is to unsubscribe contacts from specific email lists or campaigns based on the mailfloss custom fields or tags.
For the purposes of this article, we'll use custom fields to describe the approach.
The following article is a general approach to how to perform the unsubscribe. Each email service provider will have different steps to accomplish the following general approach.
Custom fields are additional pieces of information you can store for each contact. To use custom fields for unsubscribing, you'll want to set up the automation as follows:
- Select the custom field you want to set for unsubscribing. If you want to unsubscribe all contacts that failed a mailfloss test, we'd recommend using the custom field "mf_validation_passed" equals true. If you want to unsubscribe based on a reason category, use "mf_reason" equals the desired category (e.g., "mf_reason" equals "nonexistent"), and if by status, use "mf_status" equals the desired status (e.g., "mf_status" equals "undeliverable").
- Use this field to trigger a contact unsubscribe.
- If configured properly, once a contact has the custom field added to it, the automation will trigger and proceed to unsubscribe the contact.
Before using the custom fields or tags options to manage unsubscribes, we encourage you to ensure a solid understanding of how these features function within your ESP. If you're unfamiliar with these features or how they interact with your ESP, we recommend reviewing your ESP's documentation or seeking guidance from their support resources.
