Connect Ortto to mailfloss to verify the email addresses in your Ortto account and clean the bad ones automatically. Ortto was formerly Autopilot; if you used the Autopilot integration, connect Ortto as a new integration.

## Before you start

- You need an Ortto account and permission to add a data source.
- To use **Update a field**, your Ortto account needs 8 free custom field slots. mailfloss adds 8 text fields whose names start with `mf_`.

## Step 1: Create an API key in Ortto

1. In Ortto, go to **CDP > Data sources**.
2. Click **New data source**.
3. Choose **Custom API (advanced)**, then click **Get started**.
4. Name it `mailfloss`, then create it.
5. Copy the API key.

## Step 2: Connect Ortto in mailfloss

1. In mailfloss, go to **Integrations** and click **Add integration**.
2. Choose **Ortto**.
3. Paste the API key and click **Connect**.

mailfloss finds your Ortto region (US, EU or Australia) and shows it on the connection. It then lists your Ortto audiences.

## Step 3: Choose what mailfloss does with bad addresses

On the connection, open the **Cleanup** tab and choose one option:

| Option | What happens in Ortto |
| ----------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Ask me first | Nothing changes. mailfloss lists bad addresses for you to review first. |
| Report only | Nothing changes. mailfloss emails you the results. |
| Update a field | Writes the verification result to the `mf_` custom fields. |
| Unsubscribe | Turns off email permission for the person. |
| Delete from Ortto | Archives the person, then deletes them. A deleted person can't be restored. |

On the **Typo Fixer** tab, turn on Typo Fixer to correct misspelled addresses, such as `gmial.com`, in place. If the corrected address already belongs to another person in Ortto, mailfloss applies your chosen action to the misspelled record instead and leaves the other person alone.

Ortto allows more than one person with the same email address. mailfloss applies the action to every person with a bad address. mailfloss never creates people in Ortto.

## Step 4: Verify your contacts

- To verify everyone, click **Verify now** on the connection.
- To verify one audience, open the **Audiences** tab and click **Verify this list** on the audience's row.
- Turn on **Autofloss** to verify new people every day, and **Decay Protection** to recheck your list every month.
- To verify new people the moment they join, set up Instafloss. See [How to enable Instafloss for Ortto](https://docs.mailfloss.com/how-to-enable-instafloss-for-ortto).

## Troubleshooting

- **"Could not validate this provider account."** The key was not accepted. Copy it again from the Ortto data source, with no spaces, and reconnect.
- **"Wait a few seconds, then try this key again."** mailfloss allows one connection attempt every 15 seconds.
- **"Ortto has no room for these custom fields."** Your account reached its custom field limit. Delete unused custom fields in Ortto (**Settings > Customer data > Fields**). mailfloss tries again at a later field update, at most once an hour.
- **Reconnect banner.** Ortto stopped accepting the key, for example because the data source was deleted. Create a new key and reconnect; your settings are kept.
